Matilda The Musical

The RSC’s raucous adaptation of the Roald Dahl story is a delightful school holiday treat

Matilda is centre stage as she reacts to the injustice of Miss Trunchbull

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s blockbuster show, Matilda the Musical, now in its fourteenth year at London’s Cambridge Theatre, is a family treat that will burn off lots of  juvenile energy during this summer’s school holidays. The show is loud and noisy, full of action and packed with plenty of child pleasing panto-style elements:

  • colourful sets and costumes,
  • Panto-worthy villains including the evil headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, and the terriblest, awfulest, vilest parents imaginable,
  • a schoolgirl heroine who loves reading and has a sense of fairplay that would make most parents proud – except poor Matilda’s of course,
  • funny, rebellious songs by comedian Tim Minchin who wrote music and lyrics. Highlights include Naughty and the show stopping We Are Revolting Children.
  • volume levels guaranteed to hold juvenile attention. If you’ve ever been awakened by Saturday morning cartoons, you will know what we mean.  (Granny may want to turn down her hearing aid)
  • and a company of kids who sing and dance their hearts out and will have your own brood begging for dance lessons and  drama club.

It’s a great way to introduce children (6 and older, accompanied by an adult) to theatre. Reasonably priced tickets, starting at £20, are available throughout the summer and beyond.
